Burn Permit Application

For any Burn Permit Applications, it is the applicant’s responsibility to verify that the subject property is eligible for open air burning by using the Burn Permit Eligibility interactive map provided below under Step 1 – Verify Your Eligibility. If an applicant proceeds with obtaining a permit for property where open air burning is not allowed, the property owner may be held liable for any fire department costs associated with a response.

Step 1 - Verify Your Eligibility

A. Are you the owner of the property?

If you are a tenant or contractor, not the owner of the property, and would like to obtain a burn permit please download the owner authorization form found next to this message. Have the owner sign the form authorizing their approval. You can then upload/attach the signed authorization form to this application below.

B. Is Your Property Located Within an Urban Boundary?

Use the map below to determine if your property is within an urban area (highlighted with red overlay).

There are several ways to interact with the map below:

  1. Typing your address into the search (text) bar in the upper left corner of the map
  2. Zooming in and out (using your mouse wheel or the ‘+’ and ‘-‘ button located in the upper left corner)
  3. Dragging the map to move it around (click or tap and hold while dragging)

If your property falls within the red regions, you are within the urban boundaries and cannot apply for a burn permit.  Please contact the fire department for further clarification at 905-318-5932 x6230.

If there is no red overlay on your property, continue to Step 2 of the application process.

Step 2 - Review basic guidelines for Open Air Burning

Approved items include: dry seasoned, untreated wood, dry clean brush or material approved by the Fire Department

Some requirements for conducting an Open Air Burn:

  • Non-recreational burns shall be at least 60 meters from anything combustible, buildings or roadways
  • Open Air Burns shall be attended and controlled at all times
  • Open Air Burning shall not be conducted on foggy, humidex or air quality alert days
  • Open Air Burning shall not be conducted during burn bans
  • Open Air Burning shall not be conducted when the wind speed exceeds 20 KM/hour
  • Open Air Burning shall not be conducted when the wind direction is frequently changing
  • An Open Air Burn Permit must be on-site with a responsible individual during any burn
  • Open Air Burning shall be conducted between sunrise and sunset
  • Items such as but not limited to, pressure-treated woods, metals, asphalt, tires, asbestos or vinyl shall not be burned
  • Open Air Burning shall be conducted in a burn area of manageable size not exceeding 6 meters by 6 meters
  • Open Air Burning shall not produce smoke that impacts the visibility of motorists
  • Open Air Burning shall not produce smoke that negatively impacts surrounding properties
  • A means of extinguishing an Open Air Burn must be available
  • All Open Air Burning must be completely extinguished before dusk

Step 3 - Complete Application

  • Owner on the Roll#. If Business, please specify Business Name in First Name field.
  • From Tax Bill or the Burn Permit Eligibility Map Property Information Box
  • Approved Items: dry seasoned, untreated wood, dry clean brush or items approved by the Fire Department
  • Accepted file types: pdf, jpg, Max. file size: 512 MB.
  • This field is for validation purposes and should be left unchanged.

After clicking SUBMIT

Verify you received a “CONFIRMATION EMAIL” in your personal email account.
Once the page reloads after submission” reopen “STEP 3 – COMPLETE APPLICATION” and verify that the submission was successful.
